Gérard's coaching philosophy is built around a 4-C approach with a conscious focus on the learning environment, considering the player's needs and what experiences can be designed to enhance their learning and performing, drawing from a ecological dynamics-rational and Constraints-Led-Approach to guide attention

Gérard's coaching is based on the understanding that the game is a complex, dynamical system and players make decisions based on time, space and number changes. Practice and Learning is "SEARCH" as players perceive in order to act and act in order to perceive

Gérard's role is that of a learning designer. Whether working in an elite performance environment or as a youth developer, it's about recreating game situations and designing learning problems for the players to solve

Every training session and activity must reinforce our Traits, Fundamentals and Principles. What is the identity and how we want to play, the club/team Non-Negotiables and how can we refine and enhance good habits whilst designing game problems based on our Principles of the Game

Every session consists of Arrival/Starter Activities that feed into opportunities where players can work on our/their traits and fundamentals. The flow of the session can change, and may be progressive, constant or regressive depending on player needs, and how we want to manipulate numbers and scenarios, but the priority is on designing either Directional Conditioned Games or Tactical Conditioned Games that are representative of the game

Irrespective of whether the training session is a team training session, or unit-specific, or individual/small-group work, everything we do is 'personalised'
Team training sessions will involve individualised training where there is a focus on the individual needs of players and emphasis on their IDP, with protected time focused on placing players in environments related to their individual needs and in either Directional or Tactical Conditioned Games and therefore Game-like experiences for the majority of the training session
Situation
Players looking to regain high against opposition build-up, and in doing so, find ways to play forward, combine to finish outside penalty area from assist locations
🎯 Objective
Train pressing triggers, overload creation, and structured attacking entries within tactical constraints.
🔒 Rules
• High press on goal-kick based on opposition build structure
• On regain: connect centrally before accessing wide areas
• Defensive team must defend outnumbered in opposition's shape
• Attacking team must create entries from wide areas, central spaces + half-spaces
🧩 Challenges
🔴 Bibs (Out of Possession)
• Defend 3 of 5 lanes when ball central
• Defend 4 of 5 lanes when ball wide
🔵 Non-Bibs (In Possession)
• Occupy all 5 vertical lanes
🏆 Scoring System
• Early finish from playing off front players = 3 goals
• High & wide cross (originating from half-space) = 2 goals
• Any other goal = 1 goal
If opposition score in any counter goal, deducts 1 goal from tally
Every 2mins defending team goes without conceding, adds 1 goal
Theme: Half-Space Entries vs Block
🎯 Objective
Find ways to gain early entries into the penalty area from the half-spaces against a compact block.
🏆 Method of Scoring
• Entry into penalty area from half-space = 3 goals
• Any other goal = 1
🔒 Constraints
• Defensive team protects central corridor
• Attacking team must access penalty area via half-spaces
• Encourage in-box crosses + assist zone occupation
🧠 Guided Questions
• How can you arrive into space?
• How can your movement create space for yourself or a teammate?
• How quickly can we occupy assist locations inside the box?
Design the environment, guide their attentional search, allow for solutions to emerge based on game problems
Theme: Dealing with Direct Goal-Kicks, leading to offensive transition Real game. Real problems. Real solutions.
🎯 Objective
Train the team to:
• Compete for and regain the 1st ball
• Secure the first pass under pressure
• Transition forward quickly into goal-scoring opportunities
🔎 Tactical Focus
Opposition plays direct from goal-kick in a certain structure
Can we:
• Win the first aerial duel
• Anticipate second-ball zones
• Secure the first contact forward
• Attack before the block resets
🧠 Guided Questions
• Where will the first contact land?
• Who protects the second ball zone?
• If we win it, can we play forward within 3 passes or less?
• How quickly can we turn regain into progression?
Shapes are 3-3-1 vs 3-3-1
Focus: Designing solutions against compact blocks.
Activity Design:
• Starts 3v1 in tight third
• Objective: play forward + find the free player
• 2 players can drop to support (3+2 build-up)
• On finding player between lines → becomes a 4v3 in the final third
• Finish in mini goals.
🎯 Coaching Focus
• Attract pressure to release
• Recognise free player between lines
• Timing of drop movements (runs to receive in front of & between pressure)
• Change speed of attack once line is broken
Theme: Play through or around block. Arrive early. Finish with disguise.
Rules: Normal Game. Start 4v2 box centrally with GK serving.
Pitch constrained and funnelled, with right side corner/wide space cut off diagonally to near six-yard box/goal area restricting players on wide right spaces to come inside, connect centrally or find early entries from right half-space and on the left channel, no restriction as wide allowing wide players to go on the outside or inside > offering individual difference
Method of Scoring
- Team attacking large main goal, challenged to find the free player to score, - Once ball played forward = live
- Team defending the large main goal start out of shape/recover to shape after breakout and then in an organised shape to make more difficult
- Every time defending team score on transition or if they don’t concede after 5min =1point
- Team in possession attacking, looking to connect to get early entries into box & assist locations to finish or surprise shot = 1 goal
- Shots Outside box =3goals (don’t tell opposition)
Challenges/Questions:
- Find ways to play through and into box or block with disguise / how can find #9 or #10
Key Words:
HIDE & SEEK, PROBE & FIND, DRIVE-IN, LEND & SET, CONNECT & COMBINE
Players Pre-Engagement:
Framing Session (indoors) - 5mins Outline objective/Task
Q&A What actions do we expect from today to achieve the MISSION?
Using the Whiteboard:
“What would you want help on today and how can I support you?”
Premium Value:
- Disguise & Deception
- Probing & Finding
- Outplaying 1v1
IDENTIFY 1-3 PLAYERS TO LASER!!!! (STRETCH)
Focus: Outplaying and out-thinking
Constraints:
- Directional
- 1 touch finish or once score, change pitch
- Must always be a min. 1v1 on any pitch and no more than 5 players on any pitch at any time. If 1v2 or 1v3 and underload scores, can eliminate opponent or add a teammate
- 3secs or less dribble or pass-in on restarts Incentives to regain or outplay POTENTIAL CHALLENGES
- Incentive/reward for regaining possession high?
- Pressure 1v1 on outside if goes out?
- Time constraints to score after certain amount time, or when ball in opponent half?
- Touch limits in own half or opponents half to finish (eg. 1 touch own half, open in opponent half or flipped etc)
Focus:
Improve Teams Ability to Find the Free Player & Advance the Attack
with emphasis on Breaking Lines and Options to Play Forward whilst reinforcing finishing against GK
3v3 etc SSG had different constraints (eg. 1-touch finish, 1v1 on outside and 3secs or less must dribble or pass to restart with progressions of if you score, you must run onto next field creating overloads/underloads)
7v7s with players on outside
Playing through thirds, constraints to beat the block, defending team to protect central spaces and offense with challenges where varying time constraints to allow the forward in the final third to finish 1on1 against GK, whilst a second ball is played in for build-up team.
Theme: Receiving under pressure & staying on the ball 1v1
Simple objective:
• Receive with awareness
• Protect the ball
• Beat your opponent
🎯 Coaching Focus
• Body shape on receive
• First touch away from pressure
• Confidence to stay engaged 1v1
Amplifying screening & protecting, rolling and outplaying in tight spaces
🧠 Questions
• How do you protect the ball? How can beat them with first-touch?
• When is the right moment to attack space?
